I'm a guy who spends most of my time reading copious amounts of non-fiction (I am studying for a PhD in New Testament in suburban Chicago), but I found myself drawn to this book on the "staff picks" shelf at our local library. Maybe it was the cover art, which is simple and beautiful in the hardback version. It was the beginning of the summer, and I was looking for escapist reading... so I gave it a shot.

This book was everything I needed and then some. Flock's writing style brought me, in my imagination, very believably to the south, to hillbilly/white-trash culture. Flock opts for the reader to see the world through the eyes of young Caroline, the protagonist. "Carrie's" poignant victimhood aches the reader, but not in an overwhelming way. Her innocence gives us hope that justice will prevail, that she will one day be free. Her little sister, Emma, we learn, is the personification of that freedom, a vulnerable but feisty companion with whom she shares her pain and discovery. No one should go through childhood alone. Unfortunately, many of us essentially do. Flock crafts Carrie as such a likable, relatable character, and the story as such a representative one for those who have struggled with emotional abuse (though the book never imposes or condescends), that by the end it is we who need Emma.

I have to admit that I was somewhat embarrassed at the emotions that this book reached down and pulled out of me. At the end, I wrote Elizabeth Flock and received the most gracious reply I could have imagined. A fitting cap to a sweet reading experience. Oh, and I also bought the book from Amazon as a keeper. It looks great on my shelf and is as good of a theology as many of the books alongside it.

Two books blew me away last year with their killer twists and this was one of them. We're all jaded from reading too many books that promise spectacular twists and just don't but Me and Emma will leave you speechless. I most certainly will not ruin the twist, what I will say is that it literally, and I mean literally, made my jaw drop open. I had to do a double take and go back and read the paragraph over a few times to let it sink in and let that wonderful feeling of excitement that I've just been had wash over me.

Boy, oh boy do you need to read this book - you'd be daft to miss the opportunity to be well and truly shocked by a twist that you just don't see coming and that will punch you in the gut when it does. Read this book!
Me & Emma is an extraordinary book that instantly drew me in and wouldn't let go. The suffering of the girls at the hand of their stepfather was atrocious so I wasn't surprised by any part of the twist at the end. To avoid spoilers, I won't go into that but I know that you will be amazed, shocked but thoroughly glued to this book. I definitely want to read the next novel.
I read this book a little over a month ago and I'm still thinking about it today. I loved this book. The writing is exceptional and I found myself really caring about the main character. I read the sequel, "What happened to my sister" right after and loved that book too. It's heart wrenching at times, but a really good read. Couldn't put it down. I've already ordered another book by the same author because I like the writing style so much. Definitely recommend.
Carrie Parker is like any other eight year old, or so it seems. She goes to school, dreams of faraway places, does everything a normal little eight year old girl does. But she can't pretend away the hardships of her life of poverty in North Carolina. As the big sister, Caroline is determined to protect her little sister Emma from a life of neglect and abuse from her drunken stepfather Richard, abuse which is also heaped on her Mother who doesn't seem to do anything about it. This book is all about one child's indomitable spirit and her incredible courage. I loved this book. There are parts of it that drag a little, but all in all you keep reading because you want to see what happens to Carrie and Emma. The end is shocking and unexpected, or, at least it was for me. A lot of reviewers said it was predictable and they saw it coming, but I didn't. All I can say is this book is haunting, and not soon forgotten. It is one that stays with you long after the final page is turned. I am now reading the sequel and eagerly await more from this author.
Oh my gosh, what a great book!! I could have never predicted the ending! I found it hard to put down from the very beginning, and it captivated me until the very end. It is very well written. It definitely seems as if it is written from a child's perspective, and it captures the essence and innocence of childhood. I am very excited to read the next book. Thank you, Elizabeth!
Me and Emma is narrated by eight-year-old Carrie, who with her younger sister live a hardscrabble life in Toast, North Carolina. It is the story of abject poverty that was tolerable until the girls' father was murdered. Everything changes for the worst when their mother remarries Richard, a child molester and all-around abuser.

Because the book is so well written and the story so believable, I found myself having to take breaks from the life these girls endured. Elizabeth Flock depicted their living conditions so vividly that I often got a little queasy.

I loved Emma and Carrie. Despite the dire circumstances they were forced into, they tried to make the best of their situation. Ms. Flock tackled a difficult subject and did it well.
