This board book is a brilliant idea. As a parent that loved to read to my baby long before she could understand what we were reading, I felt quite silly reading children's books all day. But it was also hard to read something that was interesting to me as any parenting book seems to be very long and many times, I think, too dull to want to read aloud. This book is perfect- informative to those reading but engaging to children. I can't wait to read it to my toddler to help her understand a little about her new brother or sister!
Love this book. Putting names and descriptions to the "states" has helped us recognize what our two month old needs at various points of the day. The book describes signs we recognize easily in our baby, but we didn't always know how they fit together or what each means. We've also found this book incredibly helpful to read with our toddler. He is fascinated by his new baby brother but even something as simple as understanding "asleep" takes work with a two year old! Reading this book over and over has helped a bunch.
What a fantastic book about babies' states of awareness! Every parent of a newborn should read this book. It teaches parents about their newborn's different states from deep sleep to crying and the best ways to react to each state. Since babies aren't able to communicate, it is important for parents and caregivers to be in tune to their sleep/wake cues so that they can provide appropriate care. Being a NICU nurse, I know that parents sometimes have trouble knowing how to identify and respond to their infant's various states. This book does an outstanding job describing how these different states present and the needs of the newborn during each state. I will definitely be recommending this book to all of my NICU parents!
This is a sweet board book that benefits both the parent and the infant. Reading to your newborn is a wonderful activity to do. The infant loves the soothing rhythms of your voice furthing ensuring a beautiful bond. While the parent reads, he or she will learn all the baby states of infancy. Usually, this information is given in a text book type language. This book fixes that! Anyone can read and learn from this little book. Learning the baby states in such a simple way gives the parents and or caregivers a knowledge to better the growth and development of infants. What a lovely book!

Someone had to write a book about baby feeling states and who better that Jennifer! In this book magic truly happens as your baby, unable to utilize her/his verbal language skills yet, utilizes YOU - the parent/guardian/carer - to do the work for him/her. How fantastic can this truly be? All parents need to be aware of their baby's feeling states in order to best deal with the difficult times on the one hand, and to most enjoy the fun times on the other! "Read to me" ought to be in every pediatrician's office/waiting area, kindergarten, bookstore, and newly-born's baby bag. Hey, are you still looking for the ideal gift? Stop. You got it! Let the baby magic begin, let the baby talk to you! Jennifer, I look forward to your 2nd book, and to the Spanish translated edition!
This book is a great resource during those moments when you are desperately seeking something informative to read about this new little person in your life, but don't have the energy to read a chapter book! The fact that it is a board book means that you don't have to worry about leaving it lying around to get messy, like so many of the pamphlets you get from the hospital, but it becomes almost a coffee table book! Friends and family automatically pick it up to read through it (unlike longer books or pamphlets, which they are less inclined to want or ask to look at). Without saying a word, I am able to share information about my baby with those that are around her most.
I think this is such a clever way to give scientific information for any caregiver, by putting it in a board book that can be enjoyed with an infant! The color scheme and beautiful drawings make for a relaxing snuggle time between baby and caregiver. It should be in every infant room in every child care center and available to all parents of newborns. I look forward to more books by this author!
